Jela Steinerová: Communication of knowledge in a new paradigm of information science

The paper deals with characteristics of changes in communicating information and knowledge evoked by changing views on cognition, interaction, and relevance. A new paradigm of information science is determined by new possibilities of information processing and use brought by electronic environment and knowledge management. The foundations of a new paradigm are explained as a synthesis of the traditional model of communication with social-psychological studies in the electronic environment with the emphasis on human information behaviour. Results of the own research on relevance as part of the project VEGA 1/2481/05 are presented based on interviews with doctoral students at the Faculty of Philosophy, Comenius University Bratislava. The resulting conceptual model presents the collective perception of relevance as importance, utility and value supported by emotions, time and space factors and the interaction of the individual and collective information spaces. Relevance judgement criteria are summarized, as well as relevance in the electronic environment, organization of information, and a new model of relevance 2.0 is interpreted. Communication of knowledge is analyzed as part of knowledge management in organizations and a model comparing the traditional library communication and information ecological communication is presented. In conclusion the new paradigm of information science is derived. It means the extension of the communication model towards transformation of information towards knowledge by means of contexts, information use, diversity of media, and human activity. A model of changes in basic categories of information science is also outlined as a background for articulation of research projects and new curricula (Information and Media Studies). Practical applications of models are in design of new services, systems and products and in education of new information professionals. The ideal metaphor of “information nirvana” is used as a vision of linking communication and relevance.

Vendula Papíková – Richard Papík: Information – communication – science – research

Scientific communication characteristics are developing and gradually changing. The new communication and web technologies accelerate exchange and implementation of information and knowledge and remove the time and geographical barriers. The article is focused on the new communication tools and technologies, giving examples of their applications in science and research.
